Extreme Optimization Principles.

Extreme Optimization Techniques.

Photo of Jeffrey Sax Jeffrey Sax is founder and CEO of Extreme Optimization in Toronto, Canada. He loves challenges, especially when it comes to making code run fast, and finding simplicity and elegance in what looks like complicated chaos.

He has been writing software for over 20 years. He holds masters degrees in software engineering and theoretical physics. Mathematics and problem solving has always been one of his favorite pass-times.

His first experience with computers came at the age of 9 when he experimented with an HP-85 microcomputer (click here for a picture). His first venture into commercial software development came in 1984, when he and his brother Mike wrote some demo software for a Schneider CPC-464 (picture). The software was custom-written for a mail order company in Dutch and in French.

Things got a little more serious after that. In 1991, he finished companion software for Astronomical Algorithms, a book on mathematical astronomy. The software was published in Turbo Pascal, QuickBasic, and C. A translator program he built in a day allowed him to convert over 7,000 lines of code in less than 2 hours. It sold about 4,000 copies worldwide. The code is used in several commercial and shareware programs, including SkyMap by SkyMap Software, The Sky by Software Bisque, and The Earth Centered Universe by Nova Astrometrics.

- Marc Brooks

"I have made it my mission to institutionalize the value of good API design.  I strongly believe that this is key to making developers more productive and happy on our platform. It is clear that you value good API design in your work, and take to heart developer productivity and synergy with the .NET framework."
- Brad Abrams,
Lead Program Manager, Microsoft.
